How a Nation Fails - And What Comes Next?

🌍 Venezuela at a Crossroads: How a Nation Falls and What Comes Next?

UN Students Bergen, Kabinettet, and LAG HĂžyden invite you to explore the future of Venezuela.

What happens when institutions weaken, the economy collapses, and international actors step in? And what comes next?

Through three short talks, we examine key forces shaping Venezuela’s trajectory:

📌 US Policy and International Pressure
Hilmar Mjelde discusses sanctions, diplomacy, and the idea of a peaceful transition. He is Professor of Political Science at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences and a specialist in American politics.

📌 Oil, Law and Economic Recovery
Ignacio Herrera Anchustegui explores whether legal frameworks can help rebuild Venezuela’s energy sector. He is a legal scholar at the University of Bergen focusing on energy law.

📌 Rebuilding the State
Leiv Marsteintredet addresses the prospects for democratic recovery. He is Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Bergen and an expert on Latin American politics.

The talks are followed by a panel discussion on who will shape Venezuela’s future.

Kai Grieg, Senior Advisor at the United Nations Association of Norway, joins the panel with extensive experience in international cooperation.

The event concludes with an open Q&A.
